Sustainable Transport

Transport is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in Aotearoa, but small changes in how we get around can make a big difference. Walking, biking, ride-sharing, or even choosing an e-bike or other electric vehicles all help reduce our climate impact while saving on fuel and parking costs.

Active transport doesn’t just cut emissions; it improves fitness, lowers stress, and helps us feel more connected to our neighbourhood. In Ngaio, we have the chance to make cycling, walking, and shared transport safer, easier, and more appealing, creating a healthier and more connected community for everyone!

Our Community in Action

In 2025, Ngaio Climate Crew co-organised the Ngaio Crofton Downs community picnic – bringing to it for the first time a theme of sustainable transport! Neighbours of all ages joined in to a community bike ride, tried out rental scooters and e-bikes, took part in a walking scavenger hunt and shared with each other the ways they love to move around our neighbourhood car free. Events like this are a reminder that active transport isn’t just practical; it can also bring joy and community spirit to everyday life.

We’re looking for volunteers to help Ngaio & Crofton Downs residents transition the way they move. We have some ideas but you can bring your own, including:

  • Helping people get on bikes and ebikes,
  • Helping people plan routes by bus / train,
  • Showing the health and cost benefits of sustainable transport

Come join our transport subgroup! Together we can make active travel the easy and enjoyable choice.
